American Revolution Being a Civil War Essay

To a certain extent it is accurate to call the American Revolution a civil war. The colonists were  under British control at the time, between regions of the same country. It becomes a war between two  nation states.  Within the colonies, Revolutionaries were not only fighting against the British but also with the  Loyalists who still believed and agreed with the king. As Britain being the overall state, it was a war  within their sovereign, but also within their country. But, the American Revolution was the colonists  believing that they had a right to develop their own country and succeed from Britain. During the battle  of Kings mountain one side consisted of Loyalists under British control and serving in their army. The  other side consisted of Patriots who were the overmountain men. Both sides were completely American  but one side supported Britain and the other opposed. The American Revolution was to overthrow  the government and start to create one of their own, which is exactly what is what it was. So although  the American Revolutionary War was between those of the same citizens, like a civil war,  it also falls under the definition of a Revolution. Although some do believe that the Revolutionary War was, just that. But taking into  consideration the fact of the colonies being an actual part of Britain and being a war within Britains  control and their provence, it can be considered a Civil war. So to a certain extent, the Revolutionary  War can be considered a Civil War.

Pretend that you are a highly respected psychiatrist who is listening to Holden’s account. It is your responsibility to write a report on the mental stability of patient to determine whether or not he is fit for release. Below this is the standard psychiatric report sheet that you must fill out to examine Holden’s state of mind. Your evidence must be well documented and complete. Refer to specific incidences. You will need to research emotional depression, its causes, effects and treatments. (You might try searching ‘manic behavior†.) He seems to be rather strict and very interested in appearances he shows this by making sure t hat Holden stays in exclusive prep schools, whether he has to to be or not. He never got to know Holden because of this. His mother is mentioned as being â€Å"nervous as hell†, having frequent headaches and sitting up smoking most nights. All of it is blamed on her never getting over Allie’s death. Holden never got to know his parents because he was for the most part sent to boarding schools. He never had a chance at developing a healthy relationship with his parents. Holden’s family is obviously very important to him. At the beginning of his account he begins with talking about his parents and his brother. Holden negatively criticizes them to conceal the fact that he truly loves them. Holden is constantly being sent from one boarding school to a new. The emotional distance between him and his parents strengthens his general alienation from everyone. STANDARD PSYCHIATRIC RELEASE FORM (page 2) 2. Sibling Relationships / Rivalries He has a good relationship with his sister, Phoebe. He loves his sister and admires her. He wants to protect Phoebe from the cruel world. Phoebe understands what Holden is talking about and what he is going through. Holden feels the constant need to protect her from the â€Å"cruel world’ around her. Phoebe is concerned about Holden’s future and what will happen to him when their dad finds out Holden got kicked out of boarding school (pg 164 Salinger). When Holden is going to run away to the west, she tells him that if he goes, she will too (pg 207 Salinger). After this Holden seems to be able to grasp the reality that she will be destroying her life if she runs with him, and decides that he will go home with her. This is the only time that Holden put another person ahead of himself and acknowledge that he has the capacity to change the lives of others. This judgment of his shows that there may be hope that Holden has the capability to heal into a fully functioning adult subsequently to his re-entry into the world after exiting the mental hospital.

What do international students need to know before they come to UK Essay

What do international students need to know before they come to UK Challenges an International Student Likely to Encounter - Essay Example In my case study, I will explore potential threats to the comfort and academic excellence of an international student. My views, encounter, and success in the new environment will be shaped by Maslow hierarchy of needs which outlines various needs and preparedness one ought to have towards attaining excellence in all spheres of life. Further, some of my ideas and facts will be drawn from diverse academic resources presented by specialist in the light of the case study. Finally, other ideas will be corroborated by interviews I conducted with students and lecturers. Background Located strategically at the centre of England, the University boasts a total student population of â€Å"23,207 inclusive of 2,500 international students† (University of Wolverhmpton, 2013). According to factual information presented in the university official web site, University of Wolverhampton traces its way back in the mid- 1800s as Wolveharmpton Mechanics Institute and college of Arts. It later gain ed the current status 1969 as the University of Wolverhampton. It offers over six international courses such as international foundation, undergraduate courses, postgraduate courses, pre master’s program, English pre-sessional course, just to mention a few. Also, the university has three campuses located in Telfoord, Walsall and the city campus. It has modern and well-equipped accommodation facilities with different options to suit the needs and privacy of every student. The university offers over one hundred courses in its various academic programs. Food and Accommodation Burnapp (2009, p.13) points out that â€Å"what a body needs to survive such as food, water and somewhere to sleep . . .† aid in excellent physiological development. The university has taken this into great consideration with spacious and fully functional hall of residence. However, this is enjoyable for those who had been accommodated. As an international student, accommodation becomes a major chall enge and if not addressed before taking that flight you may be unlucky and forced to spend some few days under someone’s roof, your â€Å"good Samaritan† and it can be a hell of experience without a friend who has settled there or a relative to turn to at such hour of need. Many students are often misguided and fail to prioritise accommodation. All they do is to firmly fix their eyes on the academic part of it. This is absolutely wrong for an international student. Nelson (2012) in an interview mentioned the importance of accommodation for an international student, but for him all had been done by his parents prior to his coming. This clearly shows how accommodation is so valuable for an international student. We didn’t stop at importance of accommodation and further talked about food. â€Å"I managed to find my local food† (Nelson, 2012) something we shared in common as I managed to find my local favourite dish with much ease. Undoubtedly, it will be abs olutely right to authoritatively say food and accommodation play major role which an international must consider before taking a flight. Security Every student needs to feel safe each. The university authority does not take students security lightly. Every student is required to flush out their issued ID to pass the security guards on the ground. This is unlike my country institutions which indeed, each student is issued with student identification card but hardly used at the entrances making it

Case study on reducing customer churn fir T-Mobile Essay

Case study on reducing customer churn fir T-Mobile - Essay Example The rule was further enhanced by Sherden as 20-80-30 expressing the idea that the top 20 percent of customers generate 80 percent of the companys profits, half of which is lost serving the bottom 30 percent of the unprofitable customers (Sherden, 1994). Customer retention has become harder with the propagation of internet and increased bandwidth. Provision of several options has made the switching barriers ineffective. In order to keep the customer base in the safety net it is important for the company to fill all the loops and holes to avoid customer leakages. It is always important for the Telecommunication companies to find new and innovative ways of finding about the factors, which lead to the customer defection. It is also imperative for the company to create a connection with the customers being at high risk of defection and reduce the overall churn rate. It is important to tie the above mentioned segments in the loyalty string of the company. An automated survey query can be sent to the customers through email or the survey can be directly undertaken by sending an automated call to the specific numbers of the target audiences in order to get instant response from the customers on daily basis form both the segments of Pay Monthly and Pay as You Go customers. The survey then can be reviewed by the customer care staff so that call centre representatives can purposefully undertake conversation with the customer providing negative feedback. On the next level the customer should be provided with the opportunity to again fill a brief survey form. If again the feedback is negative the customer should be asked if they would like to speak with a manager regarding their issue(s). Managers should be notified of the customer call-back requests on urgent basis. The data regarding the customer’s survey responses should also be provided to t he manager in order to undertake useful follow up with the customers. The loss of the customers can be

Were the Great Migration and the Harlem Renaissance the Gateway from Research Paper

Were the Great Migration and the Harlem Renaissance the Gateway from Oppression for African Americans to Become Business Owners - Research Paper Example The study will look into African American businesses from the earliest periods of post-emancipation through to the Great Migration, the Harlem Renaissance, the Second World War, the Civil Rights Movement and the current day. The contention is to see how business ownership improved the socio-economic status of African Americans and how these historical events allowed African Americans to own and operate businesses. African American businesses in the United States are older than most people would suppose. The earliest African American owned and operated businesses date back to the post-emancipation period from the rural and racially oppressive South. The presence of a large African American population coupled with racial segregation meant that African Americans were confined to using shops from their community alone. The prominent African American thinker W. E. Du Bois aptly observed: â€Å"It is the density of the Negro population in the main that gives the Negro businessman his best chance.† Given the constant oppression of the rural South, the African America population began to move in large numbers to the industrialized North that presented better economic opportunities as well as greater racial freedoms. The early twentieth century saw a large African American exodus from the racially polarized South. The first of these series of movements, labeled the Great Migration, forced some 1.6 million African Americans into the North. The influx of African American immigrants saw slow business growth since most ended up joining the industries in the north as blue collar workers. Racial segregation continued in the North though not as harshly leading to the development of some African American businesses. It was not until the Harlem Renaissance that distinctly recognizable African American businesses began to appear in the urban landscape.

Compensation Plan Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Compensation Plan - Research Paper Example For example, the ‘All-Employee Option Plans’ which are currently being regulated in sixteen of the nations where Unilever maintains its presence, the workforce has been granted with an incentive to enhance performance levels and meet targets and objectives so as to become eligible for financial rewards (Unilever Group Annual Report and Accounts, 2003). Accordingly, the company has also designed a plan to cater to the classification of senior and top executives who have maintained their presence in the company for significant periods and thus, have greater tenure. Thus, the plan declares what is defined as a the platform that awards senior officials â€Å"’between 0% and 20% of the original conditional award† after the completion of a specified period (Unilever Group Annual Report and Accounts, 2003). The rationale behind the establishment of an ‘equity based compensation plan’ that is further subcategorized into six classifications can be explained by associating the concept with Unilever’s policy of fair compensation. In accordance with this agenda the company aims to continually assess workforce issues, internal mechanisms and labor practices to improve and enhance the transparency of the compensation system on a concurrent basis in 180 nations of operations (Unilever, 2014a). Consequently, the data retrieved with respect to these matters would be compiled the following year so that the formulation of solutions can be conducted to cope with current issues. 2. According to the research presented by Balken and Gomez-Mejia (1990), the decision-making process regarding internal consistency of compensation system is reliant upon several factors, one of which is characterized by the identification of the organizational strategies that must be maintained to guide the company towards the achievement of objectives. Consequently, from the perspective of employees a fair, just or

AIDS Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

AIDS - Essay Example Official Statistics of global HIV infections in the 1980s provided by the World Health Organization (WHO) for example were put at between 5 million to 10 million (â€Å"James Chin†), a figure which sent shockwaves globally as there was increasing talk about the ability of infections to reach epic proportions if prompt and serious interventions are not made to address the supposed looming global epidemic. Evidently, such a looming global health disaster required scientific research and study into its causes and popular modes of transmission and reports published by international bodies like WHO and UNAIDS have become an almost unquestionable truth. This essay will attempt a presentation of five popularly held conceptions (or misconceptions) about HIV AIDS that have been perpetuated by international organizations like UNAIDS and WHO and which have been accepted as the unquestionable consensus. According to James Chin one major misconception about HIV AIDS is the assertion that: â€Å"Virtually everyone is at almost equal risk of infection with HIV†. This fuelled the perception that â€Å"in the absence of aggressive prevention programs directed to the general population, especially the youth, it is only a matter of time before epidemic heterosexual HIV transmission will break out in populations where HIV prevalence is low† (â€Å"James Chin†, 165). This conception has proved to be false. Barry Schoub has for instance said concerning the HIV virus that â€Å"in terms of its ability to transfer itself from one host to another, it ranks as one of the least efficient of viruses.† (91) This is because unlike an airborne virus like the influenza virus, the HIV virus cannot adapt to environments â€Å"outside of the warm nurturing intra-cellular location in the human body† (â€Å"Barry Schoub†, 91). Thus: â€Å"The venereal route is ideally suited† for its transmission (â€Å"Barry Schoub†, 91). Notably, HIV transmission is to a large extent effected through sexual
